Artist Statement:
I took 2-D Art at Ames High for a few reasons. First, I know that all teachers, especially in our fine arts field strive for their students to be their absolute best. Mrs. Wede is no exception. Throughout the entire semester I improved vastly. I came into this art class as a very poor artist that had little to no interest in making art. Why lie? It was true. But, after taking this class that really pushed me out of my comfort zone, I became a decent artist, that has interest in drawing, painting etc. Another reason I took art was that I really did want to improve, and I figured why not freshman year learn to make good art, so by senior I might be able to make great art.
My art expresses myself, and especially my hobbies. Most of my "friday drawings" either have to do with hockey (My favorite sport by far), or golf (right up there at favorite #2). I chose to express my hobbies, because in general those are my favorite things to do. Why not express them through art? Many good critiques ask "What makes your art unique?" I have a simple answer, "my own art is always my favorite, I wish all of my pieces could come out perfect, but, in reality, that doesn't happen... " I would later go on and also tell them "I draw my favorite things, which may only interest me, I have an unconditional love for my own art, even if it isn't as good as others."
What motivates me to do art? I have a couple motivators for art especially. First, is my grandma, I have a very deep connection with my grandma, and I follow in her steps, she has always had a taste for greater things in life such like art. She told me going into this year (freshman year) that she would really like me to experiment with art. From that point moving forward I thank her as I have improved and found an interest in making art. My second motivator is Mrs. Wede. Day in and day out I walk into her class knowing two things. The first is me knowing that I'm in an environment that I know is tranquil, and peaceful so that I can relax and produce art. The second is a knowing that I am going to make progress, either quality with my work progress, or getting progress on a project. (1/4 of the way done, 1/2 of the way done etc.) I try to express a small range of emotions through my art. They are: passion, athleticism, and meaningfulness, especially to myself.
How do you do your art? I walk into class everyday with a sharpened pencil and an open mind. From there I choose to follow directions. Sometimes strictly, because I feel like Mrs. Wede knows whats best for me. Then again, sometimes loosely, I don't break the rules, I just like having some creativity to my own work, some pizzaz if you will. This "pizzaz" makes my pieces more meaningful, because when I don't go by set in stone rules (Mrs. Wede doesn't have many) I become creative and produce art. Which in my eyes is the sole purpose of being an artist. Be creative, produce your own pieces that have meaning to you, and make them neat.
